At Town Meeting on May 15 the 2018 Scarborough Salomon Flynt Community Service Award was presented to K. Elaine Neely for her service on the Finance Committee and Hoosac Water Quality District, as well as helping champion the merger of the North Adams Ambulance Service with Williamstown’s Village Ambulance Service, among many other accomplishments.

“Your service may be quiet and often invisible, but its effects are unmistakably loud and clear,” Town Meeting Moderator Adam Filson noted.

Then at the May 17 School Committee meeting, Peter Mehlin, the 2010 WCC Volunteer of the year,  was honored for his long service as a volunteer at the school’s library. A mural designed by Sarah Brill depicting Mehlin reading to a child on a park bench surrounded by characters from children’s literature, like Curious George, the Lorax, and Pete the Cat, now adorns the wall in one of the library’s reading areas.

“The mission of Williamstown Elementary School is, ‘To inspire in all students a love of learning and challenge them to grow in heart and mind,’” School Librarian Susan Lynch said. “Peter is a living testament to that.

Mehlin was visibly touched by the gesture of the mural unveiled by Principal Joelle Brookner, and he seemed most pleased by the opportunity to discuss features of the scene depicted with some of the young children who attended Tuesday’s meeting with their parents.
